Donut Craze - Krispy Kreme Donuts

I'm not a big donut fan but due to the ‘Donut Craze’ in Malaysia I was dragged (willingly) into this phenomenon.

The latest hype is the newly opened Krispy Kreme Donuts. People were queuing like mad on the first few weeks of its launch. You know KLites lar, everything also curious, small accident at road side also need to stop by and look see, in the end say its non of their business, but caused huge traffic jams.

Went to Berjaya Time Square with Ruth on Saturday and we stopped by Krispy Kreme for breakfast. She once queued quite long to get the donuts but this time seems not much people. Some staffs even had time to approach us and explain about the promotional items. I was like, ummm ummm, ok ok… buy 1 dozen you save RM6.00, umm, ok ok… got new peanut butter donuts, wow… ok ok… In the end we only ordered two donuts and a cup of drink, so the promotion doesn’t really help…

I wasn’t too surprised that there’s less crowd after 1 month operation. The sweetness might not favor Malaysian liking. My family and friends find Krispy Kreme donuts too sweet compared to JCO and Big Apple. The price point wasn’t that attractive also, as they are selling at RM2.80 per donuts and RM2.50 if you order a dozen. In JCO and Big Apple you can get one for as low as RM2.00.

New York Cheesecake

For me, my favorite is the New York Cheesecake and Cappuccino donuts. However, I’m joining marathon soon so this ‘sin food’ is best avoid at all cost. I’m also competing with my sisters to see who will reign the biggest loser :D.

Japanese Karee Rice - Agefuku

Despite having more and more new Japanese restaurants and outlets opening, Japanese curry rice in Malaysia still wasn’t that popular. I’ve been to a few outlets and ordered curry rice, but the taste and quality disappoints me. Maybe Malaysians don’t really enjoy having curry rice that are not spicy compared to the local nasi kandar. Or maybe curry rice just sound like food that you will have it in jail.

So behold, Agefuku Japanese restaurant, which has been sitting near my workplace (Taipan USJ 10) for years without me noticing it. There are two sections; the top floor serves ala cart and buffet, while the ground floor serves the so call ‘Japanese Fried Delight’, or Japanese Fast food. While many would fancy the buffet on the top floor (due to the Japanese Buffet trend in Klang Valley), I find the fast food section more interesting. For some reason, we were happy to see the word ‘non-halal’. In Malaysia, very few Japanese restaurant would dare take the risk to serve pork in their menu, so kudos to Agefuku. And yes, pork plays an important role in Japanese food.

We tried the Japanese curry (Karee) rice with fried pork cutlet, and I can tell you that this is the best Japanese curry rice I have ever had in Malaysia. The meat is tender and juicy, the portion of rice is just nice, and the best part is the curry sauce, which is the exact taste I had in Japan (thick, sweet and a little spicy). It satisfies my taste bud every time I pay a visit.

Lately there is a promotion on certain items which cost only RM 3 for a main course. I am a little worried because such promotion could hint that the business is not doing very well. RM 3 for ramen or teriyaki chicken rice is certainly a loss making move, as the average meal there cost about RM 10. I have experience in a restaurant where they are doing RM 2 breakfast buffet. What we get is bread, butter, fried rice and some fried noodles. The restaurant closed after 1 week… So the lesson here is not to undervalue your product.

I hope this bold move will not jeopardize the restaurant. I believe there’s an opportunity to grow and to build up their reputation. They already have good food, good location, and they are the only Japanese fast food player in the region. So please gambateh and 生き続ける! (stay alive…)

Not worth a 50% damage - Miyako Japanese Restaurant

I have a feeling that this blog will soon evolve into a food blog since most of my post is about food and outings. I’m not a very good photographer and don’t own those SLR gadgets like most food bloggers do, but I enjoy the part where you try to edit and modify the pictures so that it looks more crisp and shiny. I normally use my Nokia N73 to shoot because taking a snapshot is quick and convenient.

Me and my cousin went for the Miyako Japanese buffet in Sheraton Subang. The buffet dinner wasn’t as good as we expected. In comparison to Jogoya, Shogun and other KL Japanese buffet, the variety here is very much less for the same money you pay for. Worst still, the sashimi is not fresh and the hot dishes are nothing much to brag about, just plan normal Japanese food you can get from a low to medium class Japanese restaurant. Ok, so we vowed not to come again as it is not worth it. Then I discovered that the Starwood Privilege card that my mum gave me actually did 50% damage to the bill we suppose to pay for. In other words, buy one get one free!

We did complain to the manager about the food quality, but he soon convinced us to give them a 2nd chance to try their famous 10 course Kaizaki meal. I did remember that I tried the Kaizaki meal about 10 years ago when Subang was at it’s peak of development before the international airport being taken over by KLIA. Back then Miyako was one of the best Japanese restaurant around KL and Klang Valley. The Kaizaki is one of the finest Japanese set designed by a Japanese chef. We were eager to give it a try and since we have the 50% privilege, we pay them a visit someday after 3 weeks.

So we ordered the set with highly anticipation.

1st course – Octopus, squid and a slice of duck meat starters
Very nice presentation, good start good start… but taste mah mah lar…

2nd course – Sashimi salad
I’m very particular on the freshness. For such price to pay I expect better sliced raw sashimi, but this one tasted like what we had in the buffet, defrosted.

3rd course – Teppanyaki Lobster
Ok, at least we got lobster in the menu. This is the first time I tried teppanyaki lobster, and it was surprisingly good!

4th course – Sashimi
Similar to the 2nd course, not fresh and I’m starting to feel bored with sashimi… and wait, no salmon???

5th course – Mushroom broth
The broth is actually sweet. I actually like it.

6th course – Fried soft shell crab
It was cold… gosh…

7th course – Seafood soup
I remembered I had this 10 years ago because it is unique. The soup is inside the teapot and you pour it on a small saucepan and drink it from there.

8th course – Grilled Salmon
No wonder I can’t find salmon on the sashimi. It was cooked! With plum sauce! It was sweet, and bitter. Strange…

9th course – Soba
I’m not particularly full, but soba as a main course??? I expect something special…

10th course – Green Tea ice cream
I don’t feel like taking pictures anymore…

Conclusion:
Overall, I don’t think it is worth paying RM160++ for the Kaizaki meal. I am really disappointed because they can’t even do well in the most basic culinary practice – to serve it fresh, and to serve it hot.

Later we found out that the old Japanese chef has left Miyako and opened his own restaurant nearby. That was 8 years ago. The set course was passed on after wards and now taken over by a local chef.

So we have a clue here. We will pay a visit to the ‘nearby’ Japanese restaurant sometime.

Will I go back to Miyako?

No way! Even though I have the 50% discount…

A Place to Retire...

I can't believe hawker center in Taiping still selling food so cheap! Even Penang and Ipoh can't match the price, let alone KL...

'Ke Leng Nga' Mee (or Jawa Mee)
KL - RM 3.80
Taiping - RM 2.50

Red Bean 'Kau'

KL - RM 2.00
Taiping - RM 1.20

The Red Bean so 'Kau' until it sticks on my teeth (press Ctrl + to zoom in). The uncle behind also showing his teeth...hehe...

SiTigun Cafe - Coffee Lovers be Aware!

Unlike the boring coffee shops like Old Town or Georgetown White Coffee, SiTigun Cafe stands out to be original in every way.

Starting out from it’s very unique settings and atmosphere, SiTigun is a place for you to relax and unwind. Situated in Penang along Nagore Road, it is surrounded by well reserved heritage buildings without losing the traditional flavor. This is what I called Penang style!

They serve home made cakes like Tiramisu and Chocolate Mousse. The coffees are freshly grounded and brewed, so it has very nice aroma on par or even better then Starbucks and Coffee Bean. One of my favorite is the Guiness!

Islamic Guiness! Don't be mistaken as an alcoholic drink, that’s what the owner called it! Its actually Ice Black Coffee in their menu. Me and my cousin almost ‘Roll On Floor Laughing’ (ROFL) when the owner joked about it.

I was enjoying every moment on the sofa, playing cards with my cousin, drinking, chatting and listening to music. No stress, no pressure, like their slogan, this is a place Where Good Life Begins!

Old Towns

The kopitiam business has surely upgraded itself into a higher standard F&B outlet. It was a new concept to everyone at first, with its ‘old town feel’ and interesting menu.

Too bad, the market has matured to a point that you can almost find it everywhere around Klang Valley. Same outlet design, same menu, even similar shop names. It makes you think that Malaysians has run out of creative ideas (even run out of shop names), instead, copying each other to suit the market trend.

Same Menu...

Roti Bakar

White Coffee

Nasi Lemak

Half Boiled Egg

Similar Outlet Names...

Old Town Kopitiam

Old Taste

Papa Kopitiam

Kemaman Kopitiam

That’s not all… You will also find:

My Kopitiam
My Taste Kopitiam
My Toast

And the list goes on…

Seems like Starbucks is having a tough time all around…

Cheaper than Starbucks

Ahh... Time to relax after work. Try some Vietnam Coffee at Vietnam Kitchen, USJ 9 =)

Recommended hot, not cold though, cause ice will spoil the taste... I shouldn't order cold... but weather is hot that day.

You basically filter the coffee, add condense milk, stir it, then transfer the mixture into another cup. Not sure if they do it the same in Vietnam.

Taste like kopi-o, but has better aroma and not too strong. Coffee lovers, what do you think?
